Lurley Hideaways
A very warm welcome to Lurley Hideaways, a home away from home. Set in Lurley Manor thought to date from the late 15th/early 16th century, in a lovely setting off a peaceful country lane, on the edge of the tiny hamlet of Lurley.
The house is set well back within its grounds of 5 acres, amidst unspoilt countryside and just to the west of the thriving market town of Tiverton. The neighbouring village of Calverleigh has a pretty church and village hall and there is a pub just outside the village, only a three minute drive or 15 minute walk from our house.
We work very hard to attract wildlife, and so you may be lucky to see deer, owls, woodpeckers, or even a kingfisher during your stay.
Local transport links are good too with the A361, A396 and J27 M5 all within easy reach and Tiverton Parkway has direct rail services to Exeter (15 minutes) and Paddington (1 hour 52 minutes). Exeter Airport is also within easy reach offering a daily service to London City Airport (1 hour).

Join Us On Our Journey
A Warm Welcome to Our New Adventure!
October 2024 marked the start of something truly special for us—we packed up our lives in West Sussex and set off for the beautiful Lurley Manor in Devon! Our hearts are full as we begin this new chapter, creating a cozy, inviting home that reflects everything we love: family, nature, and bringing people together.
Between the two of us, we’re blessed with six amazing (grown-up!) children all in their 30s and five adorable grandchildren. Though they don’t live with us, their visits light up our lives. And of course, our days are always brighter with our two furry doggy companions, Charlie and Milo, trotting along beside us!
Our dreams for Lurley Manor keep growing by the day. Alongside our holiday hideaways, we can’t wait to fill our little slice of paradise with alpacas, chickens, ducks, goats, and cats, and who knows what other delightful creatures might join the family! We’re also so excited to host Mini Health & Wellness Retreats, Artist Workshops, and plenty more as we settle, in 2026—all surrounded by the peaceful beauty of Devon.
This journey fills us with so much joy and gratitude, and we’d love for you to be part of it. Here’s to new beginnings, shared memories, and the magic of Lurley Manor!
With love,
Ruth, Ian and the doggies Milo & Charlie🌿✨
(P.S. Keep an eye out for updates—there’s so much more to come!)

History Of Lurley Manor

Thought to date from the late 15th/early 16th century, Lurley Manor is a lovely example of an open hall house and is built of rendered cob and stone under a slate roof.
The house has retained many of its original architectural features. These include the studded oak front door under a later 17th century porch, three oak doorways with Tudor arches, inglenook fireplaces, beamed ceilings with chamfered beams.
In 1985, the owners then took advantage of the south-facing sheltered setting of the house to create the beautiful gardens, and arboretum. They also developed and held the Plant Heritage National Collection of Geums. They would travel the world looking for new and rare species of plants including visits to the mountains of Bhutan by donkey and mature examples of their quest thrive at Lurley today. It contains a gorgeous variety of trees and shrubs, such as Pere David's maple, Chilean firetree, Mexican orange, Black gum, Honey locust and Mountain black cherry to name but a few. A stream flows down a natural fold in the land before dropping down to an orchard which contains a variety of apple trees, pears and medlars.
In the 19.. the well known Leonard Baskin spent nine years in Devon at Lurley Manor, close to his friend Ted Hughes, for whom he illustrated Crow. Sylvia Plath dedicated "Sculptor" to Leonard Baskin in her famous work, The Colossus and Other Poems (1960)."Leonard Baskin was one of the prolific artists of the 20th century. He was a sculptor of renown. He was a writer and illustrator of books ranging from the bible to children’s’ stories and natural history. He was a talented water-colourist and a superb, prolific print-maker. His prints ranged from woodcuts through lithography and etching; his subjects covered portraits, flower studies, biblical, classical and mythological scenes."
